From Bali to Japan: Udayana Physiotherapy Students Gain International Clinical Experience

Tokyo, Japan — Students from the Physiotherapy Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Udayana (FK Unud), gained valuable international learning experience through the Udayana–Juntendo Physical Therapy Student Clinical Observership Program 2026, held from 13–24 July 2026 in Japan.

The program was part of an academic collaboration between the Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Udayana, and Juntendo University. It was designed to provide students with an opportunity to gain firsthand insight into healthcare systems and physiotherapy practices within an international clinical environment.

Over the course of approximately two weeks, the students participated in clinical observerships at Juntendo Hospital and several affiliated hospitals, including Akabane Rehabilitation Hospital, TAMS Urayasu Hospital, and Kawasaki Saiwai Hospital. In addition to observing hospital-based services, the students also had the opportunity to explore community-based physiotherapy practices through visits to local community healthcare services.

Exploring Diverse Physiotherapy Practices in Japan

The program provided students with diverse learning experiences and insights into physiotherapy practice across various clinical settings. They had the opportunity to observe Neurological Physical Therapy, Cardiopulmonary Rehabilitation, Cancer Rehabilitation, Sports Physical Therapy, Musculoskeletal Physical Therapy, and Community-Based Rehabilitation.

These experiences not only introduced students to a variety of physiotherapy approaches but also provided valuable insights into the implementation of evidence-based practice, interprofessional collaboration, the use of technology in rehabilitation, and patient-centered healthcare delivery.

Direct exposure to physiotherapy practices in Japan also gave students an opportunity to compare healthcare systems, professional cultures, and clinical approaches within an international healthcare setting.

Building Clinical Competence and Global Perspectives

Participation in the program is expected to strengthen students’ clinical competence, critical thinking skills, and global perspectives. Beyond academic learning, the program also provided a valuable platform for students to develop their ability to adapt and communicate effectively in cross-cultural and interprofessional environments.

These experiences serve as an important foundation for students as they prepare to navigate the increasingly dynamic field of physiotherapy and meet the growing demands of high-quality, patient-centered healthcare.

Strengthening Collaboration between Universitas Udayana and Juntendo University

The implementation of the Udayana–Juntendo Physical Therapy Student Clinical Observership Program 2026 represents a tangible commitment to the internationalization of higher education and the strengthening of academic networks between Universitas Udayana and Juntendo University.

Moving forward, this collaboration is expected to expand beyond education and create broader opportunities for cooperation in research, academic and professional development, and community engagement.

Through international learning experiences, the Physiotherapy Study Program, Faculty of Medicine, Universitas Udayana, continues to encourage its students to become excellent, adaptable, globally minded graduates who are prepared to contribute meaningfully to the advancement of physiotherapy and healthcare services both in Indonesia and internationally.
